Top Gear Drift Filming Accident

Fingers crossed the cameraman is not too badly injured from this incident but it looks like some drifting as part of filming for Top Gear USA went a bit wrong as the car caught the camera:

V10 Powered 1M Replica

BMW only built a limited number (2,700) of the 1-Series M Coupe (1M to cut that name short). Thanks to this the 1M has held its value quite well, with most being around the £40,000 mark, which is not much less than the list price new.

German tuning company TJ Fahrzeugdesign, is in the business of building 1M replicas. However while it may look like a 1M from the outside (having started life as a 1-Series Coupe) under the bonnet is a completely different story.

The real 1M is powered by a 3.0 litre twin turbo, Inline 6 cylinder petrol, as found in the 335is and Z4sDrive35is. In standard form this engine produces 340hp with a 0-62 time of 4.5 seconds and a top speed, electronically limited to, 155mph. This is where the 1M replica is a world apart. Power is provided by the 5.0 V10, as found in the E60 M5. In standard form it produces 507hp however the engine found in the 1M replica has been remapped to produce an extra 43hp meaning power is up to 550hp.

The 1M replica also retains the SMG gearbox from the M5 and the brakes are from an X6 M. Suspension is courtesy of KW. As part of the installation the driveshaft had to be shorted to allow it to fit the short wheelbase of the 1-Series Coupe. A set of 20 inch alloy wheels have also been added as can be shown in the image.

Testing of the 1M replica has shown a 0-62 time of 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 202mph. This upgrade package costs €20,000 (£16,000) and takes around 350 hours to be completed.

This must be quite an interesting car to drive thanks to the combination of a short wheel base and over 500hp.

The New Popemobile

You may have read the article last week about a Popemobile being available for private hire. Well news has now emerged of a new Popemobile.

Mercedes have officially revealed the M-Class Popemobile as part of a special ceremony at the Vatican.

Daimler Chairman, Dr Dieter Zetsche presented the new Popemobile to Pope Benedict XVI

The new Popemobile features a significantly improved dome with a more accommodating size, as well as improved entry and exit thanks to the large rear door.

Crowds will have a better chance to see the Pope thanks to larger bulletproof glass panels and an illuminated roof lining. Pope Benedict XVI will sit on a specially designed throne which looks rather comfortable and has the coat of arms of the Papal embroidered.

The Pope used the new Popemobile on the 8th, to travel to the Spanish steps in order to celebrate the Immaculate Conception.

The new M-Class Popemobile is just one in a long line of specially designed vehicles for use by the leader of the Catholic Church. The relationship between the Pope and Mercedes began over 80 years ago when Pope Pius XI used a Mercedes Nürburg 460 Pullman Saloon in 1930.

Unusual Ferrari 458 Incident

This could possibly be the weirdest story of an incident involving a Ferrari 458 Italia.

The owner of this Ferrari drove his car into an emergency room in Italy, claiming that somebody tried to car jack him and had shot him in the gentleman's area. The drivers side window was shot out and what was believed to be blood on the door although police suspect he was shot outside of his vehicle.

Unfortunately, he really had been shot in the groin, ouch!

Yet Another Ferrari Parade Accident

Well, once again there has been an accident in China involving more than one Ferrari. A parade of 100 Ferrari's were travelling through GuangZhou when the driver of the California failed to notice the 458 in front of him had slowed, resulting in some minor damage.

I'm beginning to lose count of how many multi-car accidents there has been in China that involve Ferrari.

TVR Jigs Moulds lost

Possibly quite saddening news for any TVR fans (myself included).
Any hope of creating new versions of any of the most recent TVR models has likely gone. News has emerged that the Jigs and Body Moulds for the newer cars such as the Sagaris and T350 have most likely been scrapped.

When production of TVRs ended these items, essential for production were shipped to Dresden in Germany after Nioklay Smolensky (current, much hated, owner of TVR) bought TVR back in 2004. Sadly it sounds like the all important Jigs and Moulds have gone the same way as TVR itself has.

They were offered to TVR specialist Powers Performance (formerly known as TVR Power) but the cost of bringing them back to the UK was too high for owner Dominic Trickett. Trickett reported to PistonHeads "Now he says he's sold them to a businessman in Dresden, which tells me he's scrapped them".

Trickett, formerly a development engineer at TVR, is doubtful anyone based in the UK would be willing to bring them all back if they did still exist. "No-one in the UK is going to hire 40 lorries, only to find the body moulds have all been distorted"

Powers Performance has kept in contact with Smolensky and were involved in The Russian's plan of installing Corvette engines into existing TVR bodies and chassis.

However that plan also failed. "We put the LS and the Borg Warner 6-speed in it," Trickett said. "We were trying to homologate for Europe and the US, but we realised there wasn't a cost-effective market for the car."

Smolensky officially declared TVR dead earlier this year and stated that he was going to use the name for wind farms, quite a low blow for TVR enthusiasts, however, so far, nothing has come of that.

Trickett told PistonHeads, "You can;t build a mark III Tuscan and call it a Vulcan, it's not a new model. To bring back TVR you need £50 million to build a new car."

He also said that UK specialists are now sophisticated enough that if you gave them enough money they would be able to build an entire TVR from scratch. "There's more facility now to buy parts and have them made than there ever was when TVR was in business."

TVR was and still is a great loss, at the moment is it unlikely the company could come back due to the climate of the economy. There price segment they used to control is now full of cars from big manufacturers such as Porsche, Nissan, etc...

Hopefully one day TVR will be back, but it won't be for a long time.

Worlds Worst Passenger

This video, which looks like it is from Russia, is of a gentleman having a ride in a Jaguar XKR with a skilled test driver, around a test track.

Either, the passenger is completely made of rubber, or the driver is being incredibly vigorous with the wheel. Judging my experiences in an XKR, this is definitely the former.

The video deserves two views, one to watch the passenger, and one to watch the driver. Enjoy.

The Lexus LFA is officially dead. Only 500 examples were to be produced with the last rolling off the production line last Friday. The 500th LFA will go through the same inspection and road testing as the previous 499, before being handed over to its owner.

The rate of production for the LFA was one car per day. Earlier in the year Lexus introduced the LFA Nürburgring Package. 50 out of the 500 cars have the Nürburgring Package, which included; a tuned version of the 4.8 litre V10 increasing output by 10HP to 562HP. Who needs a handbrake when you can use a Ferrari

No you aren't imagining things, that 458 Italia really has got a Citroen resting against the back of it.

Spotted by Pistonheads member - R5YUP, this highlights one of the risks of using a supercar in a city. While it isn't known whether the Citroen owner actually bump parked into the Ferrari or if it rolled into the Ferrari due to the handbrake being left off, we do know that there was either one very annoyed Ferrari owner or one very scared Citroen owner.

Comments on Pistonheads include these two from AyBee "Imagine coming back to your car to find it's bumped the rear of a 458, I think I'd cry" and R.P.M "I expect that reaction would be very much in the minority. A tenner says 90% of the population would just jump in and drive off". Which sadly would probably be true of most people.

Other posts include stories of poorly treated supercars seen in London, one (courtesy of Pork) being a brand new 599 bump parked and another being (courtesy of MitchT) seeing a 456GT with the front bumper duct taped and a 355 Spider with the rear bumper duct taped.

All in all if you want to keep your supercar (or any car for that matter) in as good a condition as possible don't park in cities.
