Chevrolet Sonic

What does late night driving, haunted houses and limericks have in common? If youre from Louisville Kentucky then you know its the annual Danger Run that takes places all over the Louisville Metro area.

You and your friends pile into the car, youre given a set of instructions in the form of limericks and youre sent out to find your way to haunted sites all over Louisville. The goal of the contest is to match your driving mileage precisely to the route laid out in the limerick hand book. Other than a frightful night with friends I was given the chance to test drive the 2013 Chevrolet Sonic. What better way to test it than a challenge that tests man and machine in such an eccentric way?

What makes a perfect Danger Run car? Personally I think it comes down to five things: comfort, storage space, quickness, turning circle and ease of parking. These five things are extremely important if you want to have a successful night. They are also five important aspects of any subcompact.

My initial fear when it came to the Sonic was whether or not I could fit four adults into what seemed like a small cabin. Luckily four people and their stuff fit just fine in the Sonic. The hatchback design is a real lifesaver for the back seat offering ample head and leg room. Not once did I hear someone scream, "My legs are going to fall off!". Both of the rear passengers commented on being shocked they fit into the back seat. For almost 5 hours we were stuffed into the 90.6 cubic feet of the Sonics cabin and all of us came out of it alive with all our extremities attached.

Storage space is very important when you have more than one person in the car. For the Danger Run you have phones, purses, drinks, maps, gloves, jackets and the list goes on. Unique and effective storage solutions allow you to keep everything secure while you blast around town whether its during the the witching hour or your commute to work or school. Chevrolet understands this and has a ton of storage places in the car. Starting with the center stack there are two deep openings perfect for phones and wallets. The glove box is two tiered with a deep bottom compartment and a top compartment perfect for phones plus its a place to plug in your iPod or other USB device. There are also deep wells in the doors that are great places for multiple water bottles and other miscellaneous things you want out of the way.  The Sonic has one of the best storage layouts in the business.

Turbochargers make everything better. They make driving easier and more fun. Take the 1.4 liter engine that in its naturally aspirated form might only muster 110 horsepower. Throw on a small diameter turbo and you have 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque available from 2500 rpm with the manual transmission. Now how does this translate to quickness during the Danger Run? Well it means you feel a rush of torque right as you take off from a stop. This saves a lot of time, especially in constant stop-and-go traffic. Now if youre worried about owning a manual equipped car there is an optional 6-speed automatic. This is a great compromise between the connected feel of the manual and having to step down to the base 1.8 liter engine. If I had to recommend a combination for a daily driver it would have to be the 1.4 turbo with the 6-speed automatic. If youre looking to save fuel then I recommend the 6-speed manual. I was able to net a high of 55 miles per gallon, but what really matters is how you drive and not me.

Turning circle is extremely important on Danger Run. There are many instances where you take a wrong turn and since mileage matters a quick U-Turn is the best fix for a mistake. With the short cropped tail end and tight and easy turning there was no problem getting back on the right track. The Sonics small size and shape make it ideal for running around the network of roads that surrounds Louisville. This translates to a go anywhere car that doesnt suffer from the size anxiety drivers of large SUVs might experience on tight side roads in any town. Turning circle is also good for something else, parking.

Being easy to park is one of the selling points of any small car. Hatchbacks like the Sonic make it so easy to park because the rear windshield is the end of the car. You never have to guess where your car is in relation to where youre trying to park it. While there have been many critics of electric-assisted steering it does one thing very well, dry-steering, Dry-steering is when you have to turn the wheels while stationary. With the older hydraulic system low speed maneuvers could be quite difficult. The amount of pressure in the system was dependent on engine speed and while parking it could take quite a bit of effort to turn the wheel. Fast forward to now and electric steering makes these maneuvers effortless. Parking is quick and easy with the Sonic. This is extremely important during the Danger Run when youre scrambling to find a parking sport at a haunted house or when youre on a busy road and need to park quickly.

Whether its about size, fun or frugality the Sonic is a great choice in this price range. Chevrolet has created a car that is targeted directly at the youth market. Quirky design, turbocharged power and excellent road manners make this a must have for a young car buyer. Whether its for an event like the Danger Run, traveling to work everyday or taking it for a drive on your favorite back road the Sonic will make you and your friends smile while not breaking the bank at the pump. Halloween was a great backdrop for the Sonic. If youre looking for subcompact car that offers something different from the rest then the Chevrolet Sonic is for you.

How to check your tyres

No matter what car you drive, tyres play a vital role in a car’s safety and performance. During a car’s lifetime the grip that the tyres have on the road surface will have saved you from being in a collision countless times.
The problem is that people don’t always remember to take care of their tyres – apart from when the car goes in for a service. The best solution is to make a tyre check a regular part of your car maintenance routine – just as you check the oil and water on a regular basis.
All cars also need their tyres at the right pressure in order to obtain the best fuel economy. This applies to fuel-efficient cars like hybrid cars like a Toyota Prius or a Honda CR-Z as much as to conventionally fueled cars. Driving with the right pressure in your tyres reduces rolling resistance that the engine or hybrid power train has to work against in order to move the car.
cars_tips.com_tire_tread_layers
Tyre checking process
  • Examine the tread on the tyres, having turned the steering fully to one side. Often the inner edge wears away first, so you need to check the whole surface area of each tyre, not just the outside.
  • The tread minimum depth is 1.6 mm and there are tread wear indicators which are small blocks about 10mm long and 2 mm high, located within the central grooves on the tyre. If any of the treads are flush with the indicator blocks, then the tyre needs replacing.
  • If your tyre treads are still ok, examine the tyre surface for signs of perishing and any cracks. Also look out for any objects stuck in the tyre that might be causing a slow puncture.
  • Look at the sidewalls and make sure there are no abrasion marks. Using the flat of your hand, feel for any bulges, which are an indication of serious damage to the tyre structure.
  • Also check around the valve for any signs of perishing or cracking, and make sure the valve caps are in place.
Obviously, you need to do these checks on all the tyres including the spare. Get in the discipline of doing this monthly from the very start of owning a car. Tyres can get damaged at any time, so it’s always worth doing.

Some may argue that style is just as important as function and the GranCabrio radiates Italian style and luxury with its triple-layer body color, fittingly named Grigio Fiamma Fendi; a custom dark grey with an iridescent gold finish on the surface. The wood trim Pergamena Fendi runs along the width of the dashboard. 2012 Mitsubishi Galant Review And Prices

The 2012 Mitsubishi Galant is one of the latest version of 2012 Mitsubishi. A 2012 Mitsubishi Galant is a 4-door, 5-passenger family sedan, available in two trims, the 2012 Mitsubishi Galant ES and the 2012 Mitsubishi Galant SE. The 2012 Mitsubishi Galant is available at price of $21,899 - $24,299 And Invoice price of $20,975 - $23,273.

Upon introduction, the 2012 Mitsubishi Galant are both trims are equipped with a standard 2.4-liter, I4, 160-horsepower engine that achieves 21-mpg in the city and 30-mpg on the highway. A 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard. The 2012 Mitsubishi Galant remains well behind the pack due to its relatively meager power, unimpressive cabin quality and outdated styling. The 2012 Mitsubishi Galant makes an adequate commuter car, but most test drivers say that’s about it.

The 2012 Mitsubishi Galant reality is that most cars in this segment are sold with four-cylinder engines. What hurts the Galant here is that its competitors four-cylinders offer considerably more power, with outputs ranging anywhere from 15-40 more horsepower. Similarly, the Galant soldiers on with a four-speed automatic, while most rivals provide six-speed units that further optimize performance and fuel efficiency. Still, that cant hide the fact that theyre in a cabin that lags behind the competition in terms of materials quality. The 2012 Mitsubishi Galant is one of the longest powertrain warranties in its class, and reviewers say the Galant offers a roomy, comfortable interior, smooth ride and decent acceleration. At the end of the day, however, the 2012 Mitsubishi Galant just can’t compete with the rest of the midsize car class.

Fiat Freemont AWD 2012

  •  Fiat Freemont AWD, 2012

The Fiat Freemont evokes a sense of freedom, and the feeling that this vehicle can face up to any situation that everyday life might bring. Today, with the new AWD (All-Wheel Drive) version, the model further accentuates its multi-faceted soul created by crossing the versatility and presence on the road characteristic of a SUV, the typical handling of a station wagon and the 7-seat passenger room of an MPV.

The Fiat Freemont AWD is the four-wheel drive version matched with the 170 HP 2.0 MultiJet 2 and 280 HP 3.6 V6 petrol engines, both offered with the new six-speed automatic transmission. It is a technologically sophisticated and completely automated system that allows the driver to control the vehicle in extreme conditions in total safety. The new all-wheel version aims at consolidating the already remarkable results so far achieved. In just six months of sales, the first Fiat vehicle produced from the partnership with the Chrysler Group won more than 25,000 orders to become the best-selling 7-seat car today in Italy.

All-wheel drive for the greatest safety under all driving conditions
The Fiat Freemont AWD active four-wheel drive system is on-demand, and it is equipped with an electronic control unit which uses sensors to detect the grip of the four wheels and decides when to transmit traction to the rear. The system intervenes on surfaces where the wheels may not have good grip (mud, snow, ice...) to ensure maximum traction and no limits to the routes the vehicle can take, or in the case of asphalt surfaces, to ensure additional traction and greater safety on bends.

Specifically, the electronic system modulates torque transfer through the use of electronically controlled coupling (ECC). Since it only operates on demand, the system contributes to containing fuel consumption. In addition, ECC on the AWD system is more flexible and more accurate than a viscous coupling or a Torsen® system. In addition, the control unit also interfaces with the ESP and the traction control system.

Multijet 2 and 3.6 V6 petrol engines with six-speed automatic transmission
The new AWD version can be equipped with the 170 HP 2.0 MultiJet 2 with variable geometry and the powerful Chrysler Group Pentastar 3.6 litre engines. Both engines are combined with a new six-speed automatic transmission that ensures excellent performance together with precise and quiet operation to provide ultimate comfort and drivability.
