Build Your Own M: 2012 BMW M5, M6 Configurators Go Live

With the 2012 BMW M5 just beginning to roll into dealerships, fans of the Bavarian brand now have the ability to spec out their dream super sedan however they want thanks to BMWs online configurator. Oh, whats that? You say you would rather a coupe or convertible? Fret not; BMW has also launched the build-your-own function for the M6 coupe and convertible as well.
Get ready to get your black American Express Centurion cards out, as not one of these M-tuned cars boasts a base price (with destination) below $90,000. The 2012 M5 starts at $90,795, the M6 coupe at $106,995, and the M6 convertible at $113,995. All three cars are powered by the same 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V-8, which produces 560 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (or, on the M5, an optional six-speed manual) to the rear wheels. There are nine exterior colors available, including retina-searing hues like Monte Carlo Blue and Sakhir Orange, as well as additional BMW Individual special-order colors that each retail for $1800. Inside, there are three hide colors to choose from for the M5 black, Silverstone (light grey), and Sakhir (burnt orange) and four for the M6 (the additional color is Zandvoort Beige). Those who feel the need for a full leather interior will need to pony up a cool $3500. Of course, discerning customers can drop up an additional $5000 for one of the BMW Exclusive interior colors if so desired.

 Three different interior trims are available, as are additional more BMW Exclusive trims at $1080 a pop. Packages and options differ between the M5 and M6: all models are available with the $1900 Driver Assistance Package that includes lane departure warning, active blind spot detection, side and top view cameras, and speed limit information on the navigation system. On the M6, the Driver Assistance Package also automatically selects the Executive Package, which runs $5300 on the M6 and includes active front seat bolsters, BMW Apps, soft-close automatic doors, full LED headlights, satellite radio, a head-up display, heated steering wheel, and a power rear sunshade (on the coupe). The M5?s Executive Package does not offer the full LED headlights, but adds heated rear seats, a power tailgate, front ventilated seats, Comfort Access keyless entry (which are standard on the M6), smartphone integration, and four-zone climate control on top of what is offered on the coupe and will cost buyers a tidy $5500. Check all the option boxes and get ready to empty your bank accounts: a fully loaded 2012 BMW M5 will run $115,875, while an all-in 2012 BMW M6 coupe will set you back a cool $130,175, and a fully-kitted 2012 BMW M6 convertible runs a hefty $136,775.
